Open Source (free software) software is currently used in many companies and projects. Open source, or free software as Richard Stallman defines it, means having access to the source code of a piece of software. Open source software played a very important role in the technology market explosion of the late 90s. Free Software advocates believe software is akin to speech and should be free in the sense of “liberty.” The open source method used is the multiseat display manager, aka MDM, maintained by the Center for Scientific Computing and Free Software, aka C3SL. MDM is not an actual display manager like GDM, XDM, or KDM. It is a collection of scripts and programs that detect the hardware of the computer and creates the proper configuration files for a multiseat environment. Free software is a subset of Open Source software. Like the FSF, the OSI also wishes to protect the ability to read, modify, and redistribute source code as a means to enhance the evolution of a piece of software. It acknowledges the pragmatic virtues of free software but does not believe that proprietary software is immoral. All open source software currently available is less user-friendly, which is representative of its lower level of maturity. The gap will soon be filled and they will catch up to their proprietary commercial opponents.

These are of course, well-aligned mobile phones, still not completely computer-like to compete with the rivals, yet better than they have been doing. They go with the conventional Nokia model and come with a decent price tag, yet with good performance inside too. They are mainly targeted at the middle layer of the market, where people want to be tech savvy but, in fact, they are not. Having the smoothness of mobile phones, both phones fit easily in the hand. Nokia 500 is rather on the thicker side of the mobile phone spectrum, while Nokia 700 scores a good 9.7mm. Both come with 3.2 inches touchscreens and well laid interfaces, but the operating systems are different. Let’s take a look at what’s actually inside in each one of them.

Nokia 500

Any Smartphone that was released after September aiming to compete with its rivals had few significant features. 1GHz + processor, 256MB + RAM, and 5MP camera bundled with a fast OS. Nokia has started to catch up to the competition and has released Nokia 500 in accordance with that trend. The 1 GHz ARM 11 processor along with the 256MB RAM does not score the 99th percentile of the spectrum, but it doesn’t score the 20th percentile either! Pretty words aside, the hardware specs of Nokia 500 is decent enough for a modern smartphone.

It weighs slightly lighter than Nokia 700 but is thicker and thus, feels bulkier in hand. Nokia 500 comes in fancy colors like Black, Azure Blue, Coral Red, Purple, Khaki, Orange, Green, Pink and Silver. For those who are trying to locate a phone with a variety of colors, this would be a great choice (Mind you, there aren’t a lot of smartphones with this much of color variety).

Even though, the hardware is mid-range, the operating system also plays a major role in defining a mobile phone. Especially the usability matrix is almost always dependent on the Operating System in use. Nokia 500 comes with Nokia’s Symbian Anna OS. While not been as good as Apple iOS or Android, Anna has introduced some refreshingly nice features for Symbian OS. It has a new set of rounded icons, which pleases the eye and smoothly scroll in real-time. It also features a full QWERTY virtual keyboard which was lacking in its previous versions. The browser has been upgraded to support HTML5 partially, and it also supports flash lite, but it is said that quite sloppy performance is to be expected on flash content. It also introduces multi touch input, a new Calendar application and an email application that is considerably better than their predecessors.

Nokia 500 comes with a 3.2inches TFT Capacitive touchscreen with a resolution with 360 x 640 pixels with a pixel density of 229ppi. It also features an accelerometer and a proximity sensor to switch off the screen. It has 2GB internal storage, and the user can also expand the capacity up to 32GB using a microSD card. The HSDPA 14.4Mbps connection allows Nokia 500 to enjoy the fast browsing speeds, while Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g enables it to be connected wherever it goes. The 5MP primary camera allows capturing decent images, but the video recording is at VGA which is a flow in this device. It also doesn’t have front camera to the disappointment of video chatters.

Nokia 500 is bundled with normal Nokia application portfolio and besides that; it features A-GPS and Geo-tagging too. The digital compass and the improved voice dial feature enhance the user experience. While Nokia is also known for a high battery time, Nokia 500 only comes with a 7-hours talk time with a 1100 mAh battery.

Nokia 700

This can be rightly identified as the big brother of Nokia 500. It comes with almost the same dimensions, but considerably thinner and slightly heavier. Nokia 700 was also released in September 2011; thus, it can be deduced that the two phones were intended to address two different niche markets, but we fail to identify a critical differentiator between the two phones for them to take and individual stand. Nonetheless, let us look at the big brother.

Nokia 700 comes either in white or grey color; monotonous? Yes, but still vividly colored compared to the color spectrum of available smartphones. It features a 1GHz ARM 11 processor with a 2D/3D Graphics hardware accelerator with OpenGL ES 2.0 support. The 512MB RAM provided with the phone is marginally sufficient to give a good user experience, as well. Nokia 700 features a 3.2inches AMOLED Capacitive touchscreen with 360 x 640 pixels resolution and 229 ppi pixel density. It also features multi touch input method and accelerometer and proximity sensor. The internal storage is as the same as Nokia 500 and can be expanded up to 32GB using a microSD card.

Nokia 500 features the new Symbian Anna OS, and since the phones were released at the same time, it’s fair to think that Nokia 700 would also have Anna OS. We are sorry to disappoint you, but you’re wrong to think that. Nokia 700 comes with a more improved version of Anna OS, called Symbian Belle OS. It is true that the Symbian OS is at its last days, but it hasn’t really prevented from Nokia introducing new versions of it. The new Symbian Belle OS has taken an edge to make the Symbian OS more and more like iOS or Android. It has free-form, differently sized live widgets in its extended 6 home screens. It has an improved status bar, and rather modernized navigation to enhance the user experience. Nokia has made sure to introduce a variety of applications for Belle OS that includes the powerful business app from Microsoft which includes Lync, Sharepoint, OneNote and Exchange ActiveSync which is a brilliant move. Surprisingly, Belle OS also supports Near Field Communication, which is something we all have to look forward to. It also gives a virtual snap of the applications you are running currently before switching to one of them, just like Windows preview in the task bar. Belle OS also has an informative lock screen which provides you the details like missed calls, unread message count and more.

Having powered by a pretty neat OS, Nokia 700 does not fail to entertain fast browsing speeds with the HSDPA 14.4Mbps link along with the Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n. It comes with a 5MP camera which has Geo-tagging enabled with A-GPS and can record videos at 720p. But Nokia 700 lacks the front camera, which is a heartbreaker for video chatters. Among many new features introduced, Nokia 700 has the NFC support and a TV-out, which comes in very handy. It also has a browser that partially supports HTML5, but the flash content is still sloppy. Nokia 700 has a 1080mAh battery, which can score a decent talk time of 7 hours, which is not bad for a smartphone.

Thus, the introduced Symbian Anna and Belle are good improvements, but it is inevitable that they would have to give up on Symbian in the near future. Since Nokia has also started coming up with Windows Mobile phones, it seems they would be on the game again, but the end of that ratter, where does it leave these two phones. Well, as far as we can say, both of these are pretty decent smartphones and would suffice for average use. If you’re looking for a smartphone that can do almost anything a high-end smartphone can do but still has a low price tag, then these are your babies. THE HISTORY OF METALLICA

Pre Metallica

February 10, 1962: Cliff Burton, bassist for Metallica's first three albums, is born.

November 18, 1962: Kirk Hammett is born in San Francisco, California

March 4, 1963: Jason Newsted, Cliff's replacement, is born in Battle Creek, Michigan

August 3, 1963: Jaymz Alan Hetfield is born in Los Angeles, California

December 26, 1963: Lars Ulrich is born in Copenhagen, Denmark, where he lives until the late '70s. When his parents decide to move to Newport Beach, in the vicinity of Los Angeles.

In 1973 Lars, at age 9, goes to his first concert, when Deep Purple played in Copenhagen. He enjoys the concert so much he starts to collect albums by Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy. Later he discovers the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal). He then discovers bands like Iron Maiden, Saxon, Sweet Savage and Diamond Head, which influenced his musical direction. It was Late 1976 when Lars got his first drum kit from his Grandparents.

In 1980 Lars Ulrich, now 17 flew to Britain to see Diamond Head, his favorite band play. He meet the singer Sean Harris and lived with the band for a month. He soon learned about the band Mercyful Fate, another band in the NWOBHM. Lars returned to Los Angeles to try and make his own NWOBHM band.

Metallica

The band Metallica was formed on October 15 1981 by James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Starting at the very beginning on February 10 1962 Cliff Burton was born. On November 18 of the same year Kirk Hammett was born. On March 4 1963 Jason Newstead was born. On August 3 James Hetfield was born and on December 26 Lars Ulrich was born. These are the main members in the band Metallica.

It was 1977 when Jason Newstead formed his first band Diamond with Kevin Kendrick, Todd Smiedendorf and Tom Depoy in Niles, Michigan U.S.A. it was also in this year that the Newstead family relocated to Kalamazoo, Michigan. In the September of this year James Hetfield started his first year at Downey high school and befriended Ron Mcgovney who would latter become the first bassist in Metallica.

In 1978 James Hetfield joined his first band Obsession with Jim Arnold, Rich and Ron Veloz. 1979 was the year when James's mother passed away and this led to the family relocating to L.A California.

James formed a band called Phantom Lord in 1980 - 1981 with Jim Mulligan and Hugh Tanner. It was also in this year that James first got together with Lars Ulrich. This happened after replying to an advert in local paper the Recycler where Lars was advertising to find like minded musicians. This lead to the infamous falling cymbal and bad playing experiences. James felt that he couldn't play with Lars at his current skill level.

Ron Mcgovney joined Phantom Lord which renamed to Leather Charm but the band fell apart when the drummer and guitarist left. It was in this year that Lars persuaded friend Brian Slagel to include a band he could get together to have a slot on a heavy metal compilation LP that he was producing. Lars approached James with the idea of forming a band but this time with the offer of getting a song onto a record which would become the "Metal Massacre L.P".

The band METALLICA is formed on October 15 1981.

On October 31 Jason Newstead and Tom Hamlin relocate to Phoenix Arizona from Kalamazoo, MI.

1982 was the year in which Metallica really took off by the end of the year they would have played their first headlining gig, changed their bass player, recorded four demo tapes and had their first appearance on an official record (Metal Massacre).

The first demo that Metallica produced was recorded in January of 1982 it was a one track demo of Hit the Lights Lloyd Grant overdubbed the guitar solo. In March the band recorded their second demo it was a three track demo one original song, the second version of hit the lights and 2 cover songs killing Time / Let It Loose. The band recorded this demo so that they could get the opening slot with Saxon at the Whiskey-A-Go-Go in California.

It was on March 14 that Metallica played there first gig at radio city Anaheim in California. The demo that the band recorded proved to be worthwhile as they got the slot opening for Saxon and played there on March 28.

In April Metallica recorded their third demo tape untitled but later to be called "The Power Metal Demos" this demo tape was four original songs the 3rd version of Hit The Lights, The Mechanix, Jump In The Fire and Motorbreath.

Metallica's only appearance as a 5 piece happened on April 23 with Damien Phillips (aka Jeff Warner). James did not want to have to sing and play guitar so the band were looking for a vocalist. James Hetfield played his first gig on rhythm guitar on May 25 at Lars High school at Back Bay Costa Mesa California. It was at this point that Dave Mustaine joined the band he came to replace Lloyd Grant and played lead guitar, the joining with Dave Mustaine brought the band allot more equipment which they needed at that time.

It was on June 14 that the Metal Massacre LP was released it was Metallica's first appearance on an official record the first release of the LP contained a few mistakes though the bands name was miss spelt Mettallica and Lloyd grants name was misspelled as Loydd Grant. Brian Slagel did not have the money to reprint the sleeves and they had to stay as the were.

July 6 marked the start of the recording of the No Life Til Leather demo tape which contained the songs Hit The Lights (version 4), Seek And Destroy, Motorbreath (version 2), The Mechanix (version 2), Jump In The Fire (version 2), Metal Militia and Phantom Lord. This demo was funded by High Velocity Records

Metallica played their first San Francisco gig at the Keystone on September 18. On November 11 the band played at the Woodstock in Los Angeles supporting Y&T but it was on November 29 that Metallica played their first headlining show in San Francisco with Kirk Hammett's band Exodus opening for them. Ron Mcgovney played his last gig with Metallica on November 30 it was at Mabukay Gardens in San Francisco. It was only on December 10 that Metallica and Ron Mcgovney parted company though.

December 28 1982 was the day when Cliff Burton joined Metallica after persuading them to relocate to San Francisco, this was Cliff's deal for joining the band. This led to Metallica musically reaching a stage they may not have reached if Cliff had not joined the band his influence was immediately noticeable.

1983 was the year that Metallica really made an impact. They moved to San Francisco during February and played their first show on March 5 at the Stone a now legendary venue for Metallica. Kirk Hammett's band Exodus opened for them on what was to be Cliff Burtons first gig with Metallica. It was on the move from LA to SF that the band got a little bit, too personal a view into Dave Mustaines life style. It was decided as soon as they reached SF that they needed to have a new guitarist they already knew Kirk Hammett and it was decided to replace Dave with Kirk. On April 1 Kirk Hammett was asked to join the band. Dave Mustaine played his last gig with Metallica on April 9. It was only on April 11 that the band actually told Dave he was out of the band and gave him a coach ticket back home to LA.

Kirk Hammett played his first gig with Metallica on April 16 in Dover New Jersey. Another very important reason for Metallica's relocation to SF was the work of a record shop owner called John Zazula, John put the band up when they moved to SF in the beginning, they paid their rent by the sale of the No Life Til Leather demo tape through John's shop. John also at this time had a record label called Megaforce records. Metallica signed to this record label it was their first contracted record label. Only days later on May 10 Metallica started work on their first album later to be titled Kill Em' All (after the people who wouldn't let the album be called Metal Up Your Ass with the picture of a hand holding a knife coming out of a toilet bowl on the cover). the recording of Kill Em' All was finished on May 27.

Metallica start their Kill em' all for one tour with Raven two months later on July 27 the tour went on until September 3. The band then had a short break until they started recording demos for their second album on September 24 which was to be later titled "Ride the Lightning". It was during these sessions that the band recorded the fake live tracks of Phantom Lord and Seek and Destroy which appear as B Sides on the Jump in the Fire single (European release) and Whiplash (USA release). These were the bands first singles they released.

It was around September of 1983 that Jason Newstead formed the band Dogz with Kelly Davidson and when Erik AK joined the band changed their name to Flotsome and Jetsome. This remained Jason's band until he joined Metallica.

Jump in the Fire was released on January 10 1984 the day after the band had there equipment stolen in Boston Ma. It was this event which led to the inspiration for Fade to Black.

Metallica's first European tour started on February 3 with Venom in Zurich Switzerland the tour continued through until February 12th. It was on February 20 after this tour that the band went into the studio to begin recording their second album "Ride the Lightning" at sweet silence studios in Copenhagen Denmark it was to be the first of three albums engineered by Flemming Rasmussen. They finished recording the album on March 14. Once the album had been finished it led to more live shows but a particularly famous one on March 27th at the Marquee Club in London, it was to be Metallica's first appearance in the UK.

Twisted Sister joined Metallica for their second European tour which started on June 6 and lasted until June 10th . It was soon after this tour that Metallica had their first meeting with future manager and future record label Chris Burnstein from Q Prime, this happened on august 1 1984. Metallica let the old manager Jon Zazula go on the August 2. It was also around this time that Metallica were also talking to Bronze record label.

Metallica signed with Elektra records on September 12 this became the bands American record label. Elektra records promptly re-released Ride the Lightning on November 16. Creeping Death EP is released on November 23 with 2 cover songs on the B-Side Am I Evil? by Diamond Head and Blitzkrieg by Blitzkrieg this was to coincide with their first major European tour which started with Tank on November 18. The night before the tour started the band played Trapped Under Ice live for the first time in Paris France. Nearly a month later they played there first headlining show in the UK at the Lyceum Ballroom in London England it was the last show of the European Ride The Lightning tour.

At the beginning of January 1985 with only a two week break Metallica start their USA co head lining tour with W.A.S.P., with Ammored Saint supporting to promote Ride The Lightning. It was on this tour when Fade To Black was played live for the first time in Chicago on February 9. On March the 9 Ride The Lightning peaked in the USA charts at number 100, nine days later the tour ended in Portland Or. Metallica's now legendary performance at the infamous Monsters of Rock festival in England happened on August 17 when the band appeared between Ratt and Bon Jovi in front of 70,000 people. A week later they performed in front of 90,000 people in Oakland, California at the Day On The Green festival.

The recording of Master Of Puppets the bands third album started on September 2 again at the Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen with producer Flemming Rasmussen. During this period the band took time out to play two major festivals the first was the Metal Hammer festival in England on September 14 this was the show where Disposable Heroes was first played live. The second was the Day On The Green festival in Oakland Ca.

Master Of Puppets was finally completed on December 27 1985. They played their last show on December 31 at the Civic Center in San Francisco with Megadeath, Exodus and Metal Church.

This is the most difficult decision of my life, made in the best interest of my family, myself, and the continued growth of Metallica. I extend my love, thanks, and best wishes to my brothers: James, Lars, and Kirk and the rest of the Metallica family, friends, and fans whom have made these years so unforgettable."

Newsted joined Metallica from Flotsam And Jetsam in the fall of 1986 after the tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton. He participated in the recording of 6 Metallica albums (...And Justice For All, Metallica, Load, Re-Load, Garage Inc., and S&M), which have sold over 55 million copies worldwide to date. In addition, he played on numerous worldwide tours to millions of fans representing over 1000 gigs in all. While with Metallica, the band won countless awards including 5 Grammy Awards and 2 MTV Video Music Awards.

James Hetfield: "Playing with someone who has such unbridled passion for music will forever be a huge inspiration. On stage every night, he was a driving force to us all, fans and band alike. His connection will never be broken."

Lars Ulrich: "We part ways with Jason with more love, more mutual respect, and more understanding of each other than at any other point in the past. February 1, 2001: "Who want to be a millionaire" TV program with Lars Ulrich is recorded at ABC TV's studios. This was an all-star episode of the game show and each celebrity picked a charity to donate the money to, and they were guaranteed $32,000 even if they never hit the seat. Lars got out on the $64,000 question, about a comedy act, but still won $32,000 which he gave to a hospital for homeless in San Francisco. The show was broadcasted on the 11th of February

February 11, 2001: MacFarlane Toys is showing the Metallica action figures to the public for the first time at the Manhattan's Toy Fair. The models are based on the band during And justice for all.

February 11, 2001: James and Lars showed up Sunday night at the Cactus Club in downtown San Jose to watch friends and former tour mates, Corrosion of Conformity perform. Since C.O.C hasn't performed in a few years in Bay area it was no surprise to see James, a long time fan of the band, in attendance. About halfway through the set Hetfield got up on stage and played a song with them.

June 4, 2002: James, Lars, Kirk, and Metallica's producer for the last few albums, Bob Rock, put on a show in a club called Kimo's in San Francisco. They performed under the name Spun and they played four Ramones songs:Commando, Today Your Love Tomorrow The World, 53rd and 3rd, Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue. After the tribute songs, the band went into Hit the Lights, Leper Messiah, For Whom The Bell Tolls, and then A NEW SONG!. The band then played I Disappear and ended with Die, Die My Darling.

The band realized there was much work to be done on both their personal and creative relationships, and spent the first part of 2001 investigating spontaneous avenues of discovery both in and out of the studio. They set up shop at an old ex-Army barracks called The Presidio, jammed together at length and made a decision not to rush the process of finding a new band member, opting instead to have producer Bob Rock do all bass parts.

In the middle of 2001, James Hetfield reached a place in his life where he felt rehabilitation, rest and re-focus were necessary for him to not only continue but also flourish. It meant that for many months, the members of Metallica embarked upon various levels of deeper discovery about themselves, the band and their lives both as a band and human beings. The results were to manifest themselves two-fold: when they came together again in the Spring of 2002 there was a deeper respect and appreciation for each other than ever before. And they were finally ready to make a new album, free of outside expectations, free of inner expectations and independent of anyone.

Settling into their new HQ, the band set about making 'St Anger' with Bob Rock. Those early Presidio sessions had certainly helped shape the freeform thinking and expression that was to come, but no-one, least of all the guys themselves, could've known just how fierce, raw and passionate the 'St Anger' material would turn out to be. With Rock always offering prompt and support, lyrics were written by everyone, writing was shared and performance was off the cuff, spontaneous and a 180 degree turn from the months of cut-and-paste which had become a part of the Metallirecording process in the past.

This Metallica was proud, confident, appreciative, humble, hungry, edgy, angry and also happy. Nervous? Sure, a little bit, but that too was good, yet another driver to new places and creative achievements that Metallica were enjoying.

It was in the Fall of 2002 that the band decided it was time to search for a new bassist, and after some closed auditions with personal invitees over a few months, ex-Suicidal Tendencies/Ozzy Osbourne bass player Robert Trujillo was chosen to be the new member of Metallica. Note, member. Not bassist or hired gun or replacement. But a band member. His whole demeanor, happy, relaxed, warm, enthusiastic blended with over 15 years of experience and a ferocious finger-picking style made Robert the only natural choice.

And so it is that as you read this, 'St Anger' has been completed, expectations are reaching heights that even the band cannot believe and there is the excitement of the first proper tour since Summer Sanitarium 2000. Looking at them, listening to them and seeing them, Lars, Kirk, Robert and James look like excited, eager children, men who cannot wait to be let out of then house to go and wreak aural havoc. Why? Because they can't! Metallica are about to hit a whole new level...

Lima is probably best known for her work with Victoria's Secret. Lima is a devout Roman Catholic who attends church every Sunday.

On St. Valentine's Day 2009, Lima married Serbian basketball player Marko Jarić (Марко Јарић) in a small private civil ceremony in Jackson, Wyoming In May 2009, it was reported that Lima applied for Serbian citizenship. The couple's daughter, Valentina Lima Jarić (Serbian Cyrillic: Валентина Лима Јарић), was born on November 15, 2009. Valentina was born at 34 weeks gestation, weighing just 4.4 lb (2.0 kg), due to Lima's suffering from preeclampsia. In March 2012, Lima confirmed that she and her husband are expecting their second child.

Charity

Lima does charitable work helping with an orphanage, "Caminhos da Luz" (Ways of Light), located in Salvador. She helps with construction to expand the orphanage, and buys clothes for poor children in Salvador, Bahia. She appeared on Var mısın? Yok musun?, the Turkish version of Deal or No Deal, where her prize money went to a hospital in Istanbul for children fighting leukemia.

How to be a Funny Blogger…Even if You aren’t Funny

“Everyone is funny. Trust me.”

Against my better judgment, I actually do trust Jordan Cooper. I was lucky enough to meet him at BlogWorld 2010 and was stoked to see him on the speaker list for our inaugural BlogWorld New York. His session on how to write funny blog post was one of the first at the conference; here are the main points he covered:

You don’t have to be hilarious to be a funny blogger. People expect stand-ups to be funny, so they have to be REALLY good. If no one expects you to be funny, it’s just an added little bonus if there’s a little humor.
Humor works so well online because sharing a joke is as rewarding as coming up with the joke yourself. Think about what you share online – I bet many of the links are humor-based.
There are two parts to a joke: surprise and context. You want to catch your readers off guard with the punch line, but they have to have working knowledge of the subject matter or they won’t understand why it’s funny.
Start by brainstorming all the things that are stereotypically part of your topic. Then spiral out from there – what else is related to those topics? How can you make a comparison?
“No matter what you do someone will be offended. If no one’s offended, it’s not funny.” (best quote of the sessions, in my opinion)
Every joke has a target (the person or thing you’re making fun of). Don’t make the target a sympathetic character or you’ll look like a jerk. The person has to be “above” the audience.
If you want to make a joke about the audience, make it self-deprecating. You’re the one who is the fish out of water, who doesn’t understand.
You only have to be a 20% comedian to be successful. There will be lots of people out there who don’t like you, but the 20% of people who do will be crazy fans, buying anything you do and promoting any post you write. If 100% of the people like you, you’re too generic – they won’t hate you, but they won’t like you enough to pass on your stuff or buy something from you.

I realize that a post about a session I took on humor should probably be funny. Better luck next time, I guess. (I’m pretty sure this has more to do with the student than the teacher, by the way. Man, I suck as a testimonial.)

Why Linux is More Secure Than Windows

We first have to look at what security actually is. Too many people make the mistake of calling a product secure, e.g Linux is more secure than Windows, Opera is more secure than IE etc. Now, security is not a product. It is a process with the user in a central role. Security is a state to be actively attained by proper interaction of the user and the software. Vulnerability patch management is just an important part of this process. What are perhaps more important are proper tools for patch management, stronger defaults and a multilayered approach to security keeping in mind the practical security scenario for that particular software, with the user forming both the first and last line of defence.

With this is mind, I turn to the reasons why an educated user using a Linux distro is in general more secure than while using Windows:

Much better patch management tools: In Windows, the automated update procedure just updates the components supplied by Microsoft. No third party applications are patched. Now, third party applications make up the bulk of the security vulnerabilities. Using Real player? You have to update separately. Using Flash? Update separately. So, for all applications, you have to regularly check for updates for each and every software. This is extremely cumbersome, (though, fortunately, this experience is made tolerable by use of the Secunia PSI) and most users just forget to do it. In Linux, you have automated update system which will update all your software. In Ubuntu, any product you have downloaded, if present in the repository, will be updated at the single click of a mouse. In other distros, if the downloaded software is not present in the repository provided by the distro, adding the product repository is a one time process. This greatly increases user compliance in staying fully updated.
Much stronger default configuration: Linux was designed to be a multi-user system. Therefore, the underlying system files will remain protected even if the user is compromised. If, unfortunately, any remote code execution takes place, it will only take place locally. This is to be contrasted to Windows XP, where the user logs in as administrator by default, and any compromise takes on a system wide character. Windows Vista has also moved to a limited user account by default, and therefore is more secure than its predecessor.
Modular Design: Linux is modular by design, that is, any system component may be removed if unnecessary. As a result, if the user feels that a part of the system is more insecure, he or she may remove that component. The same cannot be said of the Windows system. e.g If I feel that Firefox is the most vulnerable part of my Linux distro, I may remove it completely and replace it with another browser, say, Opera. In Windows, I cannot remove Internet Explorer.
Better tools to protect against zero-day attacks: It is not always sufficient to keep oneself fully patched. Zero-day attacks (an attack where the exploit code is released before the vendor patches the vulnerability) are increasingly becoming common. One study has also shown that it takes only six days for crackers to release exploits, it takes vendors much longer to release them. Therefore, a sensible security policy will make provisions for zero-day attacks. Windows XP has no such provision. Vista, in protected mode, though useful, provides only limited protection to Internet Explorer Attacks. Contrast it to the protection provided by AppArmor or SELinux, both of which provide finely granular protection against any types of remote code execution attacks. It is increasingly becoming common for Distros to ship with AppArmor (e.g SuSE, Ubuntu Gutsy) or SELinux(Fedora, Debian Etch, Yellow Dog) by default. In others, they can be downloaded from the repositories (e.g AppArmor in Mandriva 2008)
Open Source Architecture: In Linux, it is mostly “What you see is what you get” as far as security is concerned. The Open code means that vulnerabilities are seen by “many eyes” and fixed as fast as possible. What, more importantly, this also means, is that there is no scope to hide the patched vulnerabilities, there are no hidden fixes. The user, if motivated, may find out the security issues known for his Operating System, and take precautionary measures against potential exploits, even if the vulnerabilities are not patched. In the Windows world, however, many security issues are hidden. Internally found flaws are not publicly released, and the vendor waits for a major update or service pack to patch silently. While this may lead to lesser vulnerability counts, and better publicity using flawed statistics, this keeps the user in ignorance. As a result, an user may not patch a system if he finds that he is not vulnerable to the reported vulnerabilities, while he may, in reality, be affected by a hidden patch.
Diverse Environment: The Windows environment has been likened to a monoculture. There is great homogeneity which makes it easier for crackers to write exploit code, viruses and the like. Compare this to the Linux world. Here, a program can be a .deb, .rpm, or source code, to name a few. This heterogeneity makes it difficult for crackers to have the widespread impact that is possible on Windows.

Finally, however, the security of a system is in the hands of the user. A knowledgeable user can use a Windows 98 safely, an ignorant user may even compromise OpenBSD based systems. Therefore, it is extremely important to know how one can be compromised, and how one can protect oneself against getting owned. Remember that!

Computer tricks tutorials tweaks

There is a feeling that Linux and Windows are mutually incompatible, much like the protagonists of Rudyard Kipling's poem, which begins “East is East and West is West and never the twain shall meet”. However, Linux, due to somew of its unique features like being able to run completely from RAM, may be of great help to Windows xp users. Here are some examples:

System backup and recovery: Has your Windows system crashed due to some errors? Has it become unbootable due to some malware unwittingly downloaded, so that you have no option now but to format and install Windows all over again? But you have useful data in your disk, which you would like to have and which you think is probably lost?

Enter Linux Live CDs. Just pop in a live CD, backup your important files from the Windows partition onto a pen drive or another device, and then, you are free. Puppy Linux and Slax are great for this. You can also use the SystemRescueCD , which is a wonderful Linux system built for just this purpose. SystemRescueCD also has partimage, by which you can make iso images of your partitions and save them and later restore those partitions (like Norton Ghost). Besides this, the SystemRescueCD also has the Clam Win Anti virus and Chkrootkit root kit detector, so that you can diagnose if it was actually a piece of malware which was responsible for the problem.
Partitioning: You want to partition your disk, or perhaps, resize your partitions? Partitioning a disk certainly helps you if your Windows system crashes later, when you can just format one partition and reinstall Windows onto it. Well, all the live CDs (including the ones mentioned above)have partitioners, and pretty advanced pnes at that. They are easy to use, but you just have to remember that in the Linux world, the partitions are not labelled C:, D:, etc, but rather hda1, hda5 etc.). You can also have a live Linux system having just Gparted, which is the most commonly used program for this purpose.
Stay safe from malware you cannot avoid: You are (rightly ) protective of your Windows system, and use it for doing your routine work. However, you use your pen drive in your work place in such a computer that may be infected with viruses and malware (Do not tell me this does not happen, this is a regular feature with me, so much so that I have decided to take over the computer in my department as an administrator). But you NEED to share the Office work at home. What do you do? Risk your computer getting infected? Scanning with an anti-virus before using the pendrive or portable hard disk is certainly feasible, and will protect you in most cases, but then again, anti-viruses are not 100% effective. A very good solution is to make a Linux partition just for the purpose of your Office work. I have found it to be a very effective solution for one colleague of mine.

If there are files for applications which do not work with Linux you can save them onto the Windows partition and then reboot into Windows. However, for such work, virtualization is more convenient. I personally use Innotek VirtualBox on XP, but there are others like VMWare server and VMWare Player out there. You install the virtual machine on your computer, (easy, just like any program) and then install a Virtual Linux system. Just log into the virtual Linux system and transfer your files to it. Then, using another (clean) pendrive or other removable drive, transfer those files into Windows. Then shut down the virtual machine. Simple, convenient and you are saved the irritation of rebooting. You can also safely surf the internet from your virtual machine, though it is associated with performance overheads.
Linux based machines can serve as effective firewalls for your Windows machine. Hardware firewalls like Yoggie Pico are effective in protecting your PC. It has the added advantage of not slowing down your computer. Of course, if you have an old computer you do not use, you can use it as a hardware firewall by installing dedicated distros like IPCOP, Smoothwall or Gibraltar on to it . Linux can give added niceties that to a Windows user who is unwilling to give up on Windows. Live USB sticks allow one to carry ones files and access them securely anywhere. GeeXbox allows one to transform an old computer to a media center. These two Oses are not necessarily mutually incompatible, and it is only religion in the form of ones OS choice which prevents interaction between these two systems.

1080i and 1080p? --- Confusions

1080i : It has full HD resolution of 1920x1080, but at any given time only 1920x540 lines are displayed on the screen. This is because at any given time, in one frame only the odd numbered pixel rows have the image ie 1,3,5....and the very next instant only the even row pixels ie 2,4,6...have the image. This happens at a very fast pace, so it is almost impossible to see that half of the image is missing. But at fast paced scenes this 'interlacing' causes artifacts to occur on the screen.

1080p : In this case the whole frame is displayed on the screen at any given time, so it is considered as the best possible resolution without losing any information and at the same time causing less artifacts to occur.

Ten Common Security Myths

While browsing and in discussion with friends, I have come across many
misconceptions regarding security. Some of them are planted by the marketing division of software companies, some are the result of fanboyism and some are due to plain ignorance. The following are some of the most common:

Myths regarding the OS:

Windows is insecure because of its popularity : Perhaps the most widely repeated myth, since it was propagated by Microsoft to lessen the perception of its own failures. The older Windows was insecure because it was not a multi-user system with privilege protection. Windows XP is insecure because of the user running as administrator by default, with the additional burden of ActiveX. Windows Vista has been made far more secure, and it is highly unlikely to face the same security problems to the same extent that dogged its predecessors.
Vista is the most secure OS ever : However, once Microsoft does something even partially right, its marketing machine goes into overdrive. Microsoft Vista is the most secure version of Windows for the desktop, but it lags behind many Linux distros or BSDs as far as implementation of its security features is concerned. User Account Control with protected mode offers incomplete security, and can be bypassed. Linux users have a one click system to reduce the user-days-of risk for all software. If you use Linux, you cannot be compromised : It is true that many Linux distros are more secure than Windows, but that does not make it impregnable to intrusion. The truth is that Linux is insecure if improperly used, some Linux distros do use insecure defaults, and it would be a betrayal of the ideals of transparency and openness if such a fact were to be obfuscated from a new user by blatant fanboyism. The security of a system depends primarily on the user, and if any user forgets patches or is caught off guard, his or her system may be destroyed. There are too many web server exploits to even think of saying that Linux is inviolable.
For total safety, you need anti-viruses on Linux : Linux desktop clients operate in a much less hostile environment than Windows. The diverse environment of Linux is itself protective. There are as yet no widespread Linux viruses. Furthermore, the viruses need root permission to run. Now, if you are going to run an untrusted program as root, then the major vulnerability of your system resides in you. As yet, there is no need for a Linux anti-virus, just keep the basics right, i.e do not run untrusted programs as root (in fact, do not use root at all other than for updating your system or very essential work), keep your software up to date, and that is that. Desktop Linux does not need (and probably won't need, at least in the near future) any anti-viruses.
Keeping up to date with all the vendor patches will keep you secure against vulnerabilities : While this is true for most Linux distributions with programs downloaded from their repositories, this is certainly not true for Windows. You have to update each and every non-Microsoft program individually in order to be safe. In fact, some of the biggest exploits in the recent past have directed non-Microsoft software. Do yourself a favor if you are using Windows, download Secunia Personal Security Inspector and run it regularly. For Linux users, download your software from the repositories, if by any chance the software you need is not present in the repository, make sure to add the source of your software to your Software manager, or be sure to update it manually.

Myths regarding measurement of security:

A product having a higher vulnerability count is more insecure. As put nicely by Window Snyder, formerly a Senior security strategist at Microsoft, presently head of security at Mozilla: “Number of vulnerabilities identified is a function of how many bugs are present, but is probably more influenced by things like who is looking, and how good they are at finding security issues. That makes it a misleadingmetric” Vulnerability comparisons between Open and closed source products have an added confounding factor in the philosophy of their disclosure, with closed source products commonly hiding internally found vulnerabilities to fix it along with a major update or service pack. What is more important therefore, is how fast the vulnerabilities were fixed by the vendors and how fast the user downloaded the vendor released patch. Therefore, always ask these two questions: I) Does the vendor release the patches quickly for each and every vulnerability? ii) Does the Software have a mechanism by which the vulnerability may be notified to the user and the security updates downloaded and installed simply and fast?

Myths regarding browsers

You will be protected from malware/spyware if you use such and such browser : A totally misleading fanboyish statement. Browsers, be it Firefox or Opera , do not intrisically protect against spyware, (even though a majority of the spyware attaches itself through Internet Explorer). The main protection against spyware and other malware is through safe browsing practices and keeping your computer updated. No graphical browser is totally safe. In fact, no software is totally safe, but I am digressing.

Myths regarding Anti-Viruses:

An anti-virus having a higher detection rate is always a better anti-virus : Not necessarily. While a high detection rate is a necessary feature of a good anti-virus, other features like the number of false positives, features like boot time scanning, proactive network and e-mail scanning and consumption of system resources are also important indicators. The choice of anti-virus has to be made keeping all these features in mind.
Two anti-viruses are better than one : Using more than one anti-virus causes extra consumption of system resources, software conflicts, system instability and crashes, i.e precisely the same things you were trying to prevent when you installed the anti-virus in the first place. There are chances of false positives from one anti-virus scanning another. Besides this, an extra anti-virus will increase the vulnerability footprint of your system. If you already use a good anti-virus, a second one will not increase the detection rate by much, but may cause more harm than good.
Keeping an updated anti-virus and anti-spyware with regular scanning is enough to keep you secure : Anti-viruses and anti-spyware are one of the last lines of defense, but the primary defense is the user. Anti-viruses and anti-spyware are actually flawed security tools, depending on a blacklist of signatures (Good security is whitelist based, rather like a firewall passing only packets that are explicitly defined, and blocking all others). Therefore, some viruses or worms will be missed by even the best of these tools. Furthermore, antiviruses certainly do not help you in the event of phishing. Computer attacks have become increasingly sophisticated, and anti-viruses and anti-spyware (even though they remain important) increasingly find themselves on the fringe of the action.
