It’s already hard enough to sleep when it’s hot outside, but what if the heat of your brain is also adding to insomnia? Researchers reported this week that cooling down your lobes can help those with sleep problems doze off faster and stay asleep longer.Scientists from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine presented their cold brain idea at the annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies, says Time, with the idea that previous studies already showed insomniacs have increased levels of activity in their frontal lobes.When you’re awake, your body keeps itself at a higher temperature to do things like plan, organize and be logical. So if it keeps doing that at night, and stays at a higher temp, it could affect sleep.Dr. Daniel Buysse, a psychiatrist at the university, and his team gave 12 insomniacs a cap with cool circulating water inside. With those on, it took around 13 minutes to fall asleep, compared to the 16 minutes for healthy controls. They also slept for 89% of their time in bed, similar to normal controls.Now we just need someone to invent a comfortable cooling cap for everyday consumers who might not want to take sleep aids. Sinusitis is treated with medicines and home treatment methods, such as applying moist heat to your face. The goals of treatment for sinusitis are to:

Creation of new content

It became known as Project Galactic Guide. Although it originally aimed to contain only real, factual articles, policy was changed to allow and encourage semi-real and unreal articles as well. Project Galactic Guide contains over 1700 articles, but no new articles have been added since 2000; this is probably partly due to the founding of h2g2, a more official project along similar lines.

Squint your eyes enough to see who are in this picture

There was an interesting article on PsychWorld last week. It points out how us humans, as intelligent creatures, have a pretty remarkable ability to recognize faces. But what would happen if the faces we see got obscured in some way? Like upside-down heads with inverted eyes and lips? How about if they were made into pixelized blocks, for instance? Would we still able to make out who might be depicted in those obscured images?These pixelized block portraits were inspired by Leon Harmon and Bela Julesz’s 1973 Lincoln Illusion. If I’m right, there should be no problem for you to recognize who are the famous people in the following images.Try squinting your eyes as much as you can, or look from afar if you need to. The only thing that might prevent you from recognizing the correct celebrity, is if you are not very familiar with American cultureI just can’t believe our brain’s ability to pick up a face from such intensively reduced images! When you think about it for a second, these images are consisted of just a few single-colored squares! Also, be sure to notice, how photos become almost sharp if you squint your eyes enough. Actually java is not the thing for EEE. its better for software development, strictly object oriented, has support for state of the art development methods and patterns. Main feature is that - java is platform independent. As a EEE student one shall need low level access to the computer - java will not help one much, if any one are looking from academic side.

As a person who loves programming, I have a special love for Java Programming. Base on my experiences in this programming language here are 5 important tips that you need to know while learning Java and other programming languages.

It is just normal to be difficult if you are really a beginner in the sense that you did not use any programming language in the past. You, basically, start from scratch. To avoid waste of time and dizziness while looking at a foreign code know the Java Predefined Keywords and its function in Java Programming. It will save yourself from asking “what the hell is this?”. Once you have become acquainted with the basics, the following steps will be easy for you.

Practice to code what you have learned. It is not necessarily to be long and complicated, just code those simple problems in your java book that is suited for a beginner, like entering a number and outputting what you entered or much simpler- outputting a certain word or sentence using the System.out.print()predefined function. The purpose of this is for you to be able to see how it works. Whenever you see a complete code (working code) on your textbook, test it on your compiler, this will help you to familiarize each codes functions. All About the Carburetor

What does a carburetor do?

The carburetor has several functions:

1) it combines gasoline and air creating a highly combustible mixture,

2) it regulates the ratio of air and fuel, and

3) it controls the engine's speed.

How a carburetor mixes fuel and air

When the piston moves down the cylinder on the intake stroke it draws air from the cylinder and intake manifold. A vacuum is created that draws air from the carburetor. The airflow through the carburetor causes fuel to be drawn from the carburetor through the intake manifold past the intake valves and into the cylinder. The amount of fuel mixed into the air to obtain the required air to fuel ratio is controlled by the venturi or choke. When air flows through the venturi its speed increases and the pressure drops. This causes the fuel to be sucked into the

air stream from a hole or jet. When the engine is at idle or at rapid acceleration there is not enough air passing through the venturi to draw fuel. To o
vercome these problems other systems are used.

Delivering gasoline to the carburetor

Gasoline is delivered to the carburetor by the fuel pump and is stored in the fuel bowl. To keep this level of fuel stored in the bowl constant under all conditions a float system is used. A float operated needle valve and seat at the fuel inlet is used to control the fuel level in the bowl. If the fuel level drops below a certain level the float lowers and opens the valve letting more fuel in. When the float rises it pushes the inlet valve against the seat and shuts off the flow of fuel into the bowl.

Controlling the speed of the engine

The throttle controls the speed of the engine by controlling the amount of air fuel allowed in the engine. The throttle is a butterfly valve located after the venturi and is opened by pressing on the gas pedal. The farther the valve is opened the more air/fuel mixture is let into the engine and the faster the engine runs. At low engine speeds when the throttle is only open a little there is not enough air flow to pull in fuel.

Ports

Two ports are used to solve this problem. One port located in the low pressure area and the idle port located below. At low engine speeds both ports draw fuel to keep the engine running. As engine speed increases fuel from the 2 ports decreases until it stops completely.

Handling low speeds

When the engine is idle there is very little air flowing through the venturi because the throttle valve is closed. The idle port allows the engine to operate under this condition. Fuel is forced through the idle port because of a pressure differential between air in the fuel bowl and vacuum below the throttle valve. Idle fuel mixture is controlled by an adjustable needle valve.

Handling high speeds

At higher engine speeds more fuel is drawn from the main nozzle. Fuel comes from the fuel bowl through the fuel nozzle and into the throat of the carburetor where it mixes with air.

Types of carburetors

There are 3 basic types of carburetors in use today. They are the one barrel, two barrel, and four barrel. Typically, the type of engine and its use will dictate which carburetor is used. In high performance engines multiple carburetors may be used to deliver the amount of fuel required. Inspirational and Heart Touching Story "The Father and son"

An 80 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45 years old highly educated son.

Suddenly a crow perched on their window.
The Father asked his Son, "What is this?"
The Son replied "It is a crow".
After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, "What is this?"
The Son said "Father, I have just now told you "It's a crow".
After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time, What is this?"
At this time some ex-pression of irritation was felt in the Son's tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. "It's a crow, a crow"
A little after, the Father again asked his Son the 4th time, "What is this?"
This time the Son shouted at his Father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times 'IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?"

A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On openinga page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary :-
"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. Idid not at all feel irritated I rather felt affection for my innocent child".
While the little child asked him 23 times "What is this", the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and whentoday the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed.
Lesson to learn from This Story:
If your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient, humble and kind to them. Be considerate to your parents.

How to chose the right WiFi channel

With increasing density of WiFi networks we're facing more and more WiFi networks popping up in our neighbourhoods, which may impact performance on your WiFi network, if frequencies interfere.

To scan your neighbourhood for active WiFi networks use "Netstumbler", an easy-to-use WiFi scanner for Windows. After starting Netstumbler will show you all discovered networks inlcuding the used channels.

Two WiFi networks operating on the same channel are forced to share bandwidth, as they can't "talk" simultaneously, which halves each network's bandwidth. In order to evade this effect, you need to change your access point's channel, but taking the adjacent one won't do it, as WiFi channels are arranged in an overlapping pattern, as you can see from this scheme:

Channel 1 overlaps channels 2 to 5, which therefore may not be used for a neighbouring WiFi network. If channel 1 is used, you should switch to channel >=6.

There must be a spacing of at least 5 channels (or more) between each WiFi network in order to avoid interferences.

Further, if all your WiFi-devices support 802.11g (the 54 MBit/s WiFi-variant), you should set your router to 802.11g-only mode, as the 802.11b-compatibility impacts on bandwidth and range even among 802.11g-devices. Another possible cause of low performance may be proprietary WiFi acceleration modes like "SuperG", "MAXg", "125 High Speed Mode" or "SpeedBooster", if not all devices in your network support the very same mode, why you should disable those.

Also note that a lot of cordless phones in NZ operate at the 2.4 GHz band like Wifi and so most of them cause interferences WiFi, that can't be avoided by a channel change, since those phones use a very broad spectrum or perform permanent frequency hopping.
If you own a 2.4 GHz phone, try switching it off and removing the power supply of it's base station. In case your wireless signal improves, replace your cordless phone with a new one operating at 1.8 GHz or 5.8 GHz.

How to Build Your Own Speakers: Step-by-Step

It was back in 1924 that a couple of researchers from General Electric, Chester Rice and Edward Kellogg, patented what remains the basic design for virtually all the world's loudspeakers. In the 84 years since, engineers and enthusiasts have invested a lot of thought and energy in the refinement of Rice and Kellogg's concept, creating a valuable knowledge base for the do-it-yourself crowd.

At its core a loudspeaker is a surprisingly simple device. The key elements are the drivers, crossovers and the cabinet. The cone or dome drivers are transducers that transform the electrical signal into the physical movement of air (i.e., sound). Crossovers act as an electrical filter to split the signal and direct the portions of the audio-frequency range to the drivers best equipped to handle them. But coaxing rich and beautiful sound out of these elements requires a bit of harmonic alchemy. Every decision you make--from the combination of drivers and crossovers to the material you use to build the cabinet--influences the performance and character of your speakers.

Hard core speaker hobbyists take delight in figuring all this out for themselves, designing and building the crossovers and enclosures from scratch to see what comes out. If that's your leaning, Parts Express is a well-stocked and reliable source for speaker builders and a good place to start.

But if that's too hit-or-miss, you can buy a speaker kit that comes with all the components, plus either a preconstructed cabinet or drawings to build your own. For this project, I opted for one of these hybrid kits, from North Creek Music Systems in Old Forge, N.Y. This little firm is run by George Short, a speaker engineer whose kits use his own driver and crossover designs but require you to buy cabinets elsewhere, or build them using the provided detailed woodworking plans. The benefit is that someone with know-how and good ears has gone through the time-consuming and costly process of "voicing" the speaker--engineering, auditioning and then re-engineering it until the desired sound is achieved.

My own speaker-building ambitions were no grander than to have a little fun, learn a bit and come out with a pair of bookshelf speakers I could put in my home office. I selected North Creek's Okara II "Ikemo" kit, a ported design that delivers decent bass (down to about 60 Hz) from a small 0.25-cu.-ft. cabinet measuring 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 x 9 5/8 in. Its 5 1/2-in. woofer has a lightweight pressed-fiber cone coated with polypropylene, and the tweeter is a 1-in. silk dome. Silk is a material favored by many audiophiles for delivering superb midrange- and high-frequency detail without sounding bright or hard, the way some metal domes can.

The kit costs $369 for the pair and comes with everything except lumber and wood glue: drivers, crossovers, port tubes, acoustic stuffing and gaskets, the terminal cup for hooking up the wires from your amp and miscellaneous hardware. The simple crossovers--one each for the woofer and tweeter in each speaker--come with the coils, capacitors and resistors hard-wired on perforated breadboards. That saves some work, but these still must be mounted in the cabinets and wired to the drivers.

Building the cabinet was the most time-consuming part of the project, but it allowed me to customize the look of my speakers. Initially, I intended to build the cabinet from solid hardwood, but North Creek's plans recommend a combination of 3/4-in. medium-density fiberboard (MDF) backed with a layer of 3/4-in. birch plywood on the front fascia and back pieces. It turns out that MDF is not only cheaper, easier to mill and less susceptible to warping and shifting than hardwood, but the difference in densities of the MDF and plywood also reduces cabinet vibrations when you layer them together. To add rigidity, there is a plywood crossbrace running internally across the width of the box.

I painted the fascia and back MDF panels matte black and veneered the top, bottom and sides to effect the look of a hardwood finish. By scouting the Web I found an outstanding Italian-made composite veneer called Alpiwood, distributed by Brookside Veneers in Cranbury, N.J. It's an environmentally responsible material made from plantation-grown poplar that's been dyed and grained to match about 30 different common and exotic hardwoods, and it even comes prefinished with a polyurethane coating. The bird's-eye maple I chose has a tough laminate substrate and ships with a plastic sheet adhered to the finish to protect it during installation. You peel off the sheet after you've cut and applied the veneer--the stunning result is hard to distinguish from real finished hardwood.

One other tip: Invest in a Jasper circle-cutting jig for the driver, port and terminal-cup holes. The jig (model 400, partsexpress.com) is a legendary speaker-building tool that gets screwed to the base of the router to make perfect circle cuts that would otherwise be manually jigsawed. It costs $27 and is worth every penny.

After assembling the cabinet, I used construction adhesive to mount the tweeter and woofer crossovers inside the cabinet to the back and bottom walls, respectively. There's an odd bit of business in the kit's instructions about filling the rear-firing port tube with several dozen plastic straws that confused me at first, but a call to North Creek revealed that the straws help fine-tune the speaker's low-end bass limit. Then I connected the wires from the crossovers to the drivers on one end and the terminal cup on the other. And, finally, the woofers, tweeters, terminal cup and rear-firing port tube were glued and screwed into place.

After spending less than $100 for wood, on top of the cost of the kit, I ended up with a high-performance system that sounded better than most $500 speaker pairs I've heard. Though bass was limited by the speaker's size, it was well-balanced, without the inaccurate, bloated sound you hear with cheap speakers purposely pumped up to overcompensate for their size. The midrange was musical and open, free of the harsh colorations you sometimes hear on vocals. High frequencies were nicely detailed, if a little laid back, and held together well at moderately high volumes for such a compact speaker.

For me, speaker building was a rewarding mix of woodworking and electronics--beautiful and functional at the same time. When friends and family come to visit and comment on the rich, bird's-eye maple cabinets, I'll tell them, "Yeah, I built those. But just listen ..."

This was not mentioned in the instructions, which seemed to have been written long ago, and on several occasions didn't fully account for the peculiarities of the included parts. But half the fun is wingin' it.

Prep for assembly includes dry-fitting all the pieces and tweaking panels as needed for a perfect fit.

For efficiency, assembly involves gluing and clamping the panels together with butt joints, then putting in temporary drywall screws to keep the glue joints tight while you remove the clamps and move on to the next panel. After the glue drys, the screws come out and the holes and countersinks are filled with wood putty.

Ohms, Amps and Speakers

One Step Back

Guitar pickups and microphones are known as transducers, meaning they convert sound waves into electrical impulses. Sound is vibration in the air, and these transducers pick up this vibration and turn it into electrical energy. Electrician generators move a piece of metal into and out of a magnetic field, creating electricity. Transducers do the same thing, but since the piece of metal moves in a complex way (guitar string, ribbon in a microphone) the electricity that gets created has a complex pattern as well.

A speaker is the opposite. A magnet and a piece of metal. Only this time, the metal generates electricity, causing the magnet to vibrate. In fact, I've hooked up speakers as microphones! It's a very interesting sound to record and listen to.

I already knew all this, but the whole Ohms thing had me confused.

What are Ohms?

Ohms is a measure of resistance. You don't think of it, but substances conduct or resist electricity on a scale. Rubber isn't very conducive, copper is. This is why some premium cable are made out of silver - silver & other expensive materials - they conduct electricity better than others.

When the electricity passes into the speaker, some of it is resisted. The ohms rating of the speaker is a measure of how much electricity is resisted by the speaker, and an indication of how much energy it takes to drive it - the higher the ohms rating, the more difficult it is to drive.

An amplifier amplifies the electrical signal, causing the speaker to vibrate with greater force, otherwise the impulse would be barely audible (think of the size of a microphone vs. the size of a speaker). How much the amp drives the speaker is measured in watts. When an amp manufacturer gives it's wattage rating, it's always at a specific Ohm resistance. "100 watts @ 4 ohms," for example. When the resistance is 4 ohms, this amp will produce 100 watts. If that resistance changes, the amp will produce a different amount of watts.

This is the core concept to understand. We're used to things that have a strength independent of their surroundings. A flashlight produces light independent of how bright or dark it is. Since electricity usually travels in a loop, from a negative terminal to a positive one (which is why you have to hook up both halves of a battery) the elements in the loop affect the output. Alternating Current makes things even more complex, but I'm not going to address that here. These calculations are based on DC, but serve as good averages for AC as well.

If you're still confused, think of water in a hose. The larger the hose, the less pressure is produced at the end of the hose, even though the same amount of water is flowing through it.

How do I calculate Ohms - Series Wiring

If you connect your amp to one speaker, the ohms rating is equal to that speaker's ohms rating. An 8 ohms speaker would have a rating of 8 ohms.

If you wire two or more speakers in series, you add the ohms rating together to get the total ohms. I know what series & parallel wiring is from grade school science. It's hard to describe without diagrams, so I'll keep my description minimal. You can refer to the diagrams in the articles from my bibliography if you need more help.

My grade school science book had the example of christmas lights. When you wire the lights in series, you connect the + terminal of one light to the - terminal of the next light. The electricity flows through one light, and then on to the next. If any of the lights goes out, or any of the connections breaks, all of the lights go out. The connection is broken.

This increases the total resistance, reducing the total acoustical output. That is, because the electricity has to flow through each speaker one at a time, each speaker adds it's resistance to the whole. The formula is as follows:

Speaker A + Speaker B = Total Ohms Rating
8 Ohms + 8 Ohms = 16 Ohms

Two 8 Ohms speakers wired in series will have a total rating of 16 ohms.

How do I calculate Ohms - Parallel Wiring

Parallel wiring is something entirely different. If one of the Christmas lights goes out, none of the others goes out. Visually, this looks like a ladder, with each light in the center of a rung. Remove one of the rungs, and the electricity still flows to the next rung via the sides of the ladder.

This reduces the total resistance increasing the total output. That is, because electricity flows through all of the speakers simultaneously, each speaker added reduces the resistance of the chain. If you visualize all of the negative electrons on one side trying to get to the other, they'll have an easier time because there are so many possible paths for them to go by.

Resistance = (Speaker A x Speaker B) / (Speaker A + Speaker B)
Resistance = (8 Ohms x 8 Ohms) / (8 Ohms + 8 Ohms)
Resistance = 64 / 16
Resistance = 4 Ohms

Another calculation I've seen, which may be the same formula stated a different way, or may be more accurate or less accurate is:

Resistance = 1 / (1/Speaker A + 1/Speaker B)
Resistance = 1 / (1 / 8 Ohms + 1 / 8 Ohms)
Resistance = 1 / (2/8)
Resistance = 1 / .25
Resistance = 4 Ohms

How do I calculate Amplifier Output?

The calculation for figuring out how much is fairly straightforward, and pretty much what I would expect it to be. Since ohms measure resistance, the more ohms, the less output from the amplifier. Conversely, the less ohms, the more output from the amplifier.

Since the amp is rated at a specific amount of ohms (i.e. 100 watts @ 4 ohms), a different amount of ohms will produce a different output. Two 8 ohms speakers wire in series (16 ohms total) would cause the amp to produce 25 watts to each speaker.

Amplifier Output = Amplifier Watts x (Amplifier Rated at Ohms / Speaker Chain Ohms)
Amplifier Output = 100 watts x (4 ohms / 16 ohms)
Amplifier Output = 100 watts x 1/4
Amplifier Output = 25 watts

An amplifier designed to put out 100 watts into 8 ohms will put out 200 watts into 4 ohms. Two 8 ohms speakers wired in parallel (4 ohms total) would cause the amplifier to produce 200 watts.

200 watts = 100 watts x (8 ohms / 4 ohms)

The amp produces 100 watts at 4 ohms. When the resistance is increased to 16 ohms, four times what it was rated, the amplifier produces one fourth as many watts.

You must be careful when wiring multiple speakers together in a series or parallel chain because the amplifier may have trouble dealing with certain Ohms chain ratings, especially below 4 and above 16, and you must be sure that your speakers are capable of handling the wattage that they're receiving. Be sure to check the manual for all of your equipment before doing any of this.

The limiting factor, from what I hear, is the power supply. If the power supply isn't designed to handle a 2 Ohm load, you may fry your amp. In fact, it takes a very special amp to work below 4 Ohms. Again, check the manual, call the manufacturer, don't just start wiring things into a 1 Ohm load hoping to get 4 times the power out of your amp.

Mike Faithfull informs me of another possible problem: You could also destroy a transistor in the output stage by demanding it to supply more current (into the extra-low resistance load) than it is rated for (this is probably a more common failure than the power supply!)

Conclusion

When combining speakers in a chain, you can do it in Series, Parallel, or even mix the two methods to ensure that the resistance is what you want it to be. With the right equipment you can use this to increase or reduce the output of any element in your chain.

In reading the calculations from various sources, I sort of skimmed over the complex math, but I know that there is complex math and these calculations are only approximations. Real World conditions may yield actual results that are somewhat different from these simplistic mathematical models. Speaker cabinets can even affect the Ohms rating of the speaker! Also, don't mix speakers, make sure all of the speakers in your chain have the same ohms rating. It would probably be a good idea to be sure they all have similar wattage ratings.

In other words, try this at home, but be extremely careful with the calculations and read the manual. Don't try anything too extreme like hooking up 18 speakers in a row, even if your speakers and amp say that they can handle what your calculations say because these calculations are only approximates and you could do serious damage to, well, a lot of things.
